Former MHS Tennis Coach Reaches 1,000 Wins (Video)

Elliot Lovi reached the 1,000 win mark on April 21 after 39 years with Livingston and 27 years in Millburn.

Elliot Lovi, a legend in both Millburn and Livingston high school sports, was honored by the Livingston Board of Education Monday night for being the winningest coach in the country, having recently amassed 1,000 career wins. For 39 years, Lovi has guided the Livingston Lancers in boys tennis and had coached the Millburn girls team for 27 years before leaving last summer to coach both boys and girls in Livingston. On April 21, he became the first coach nationwide to amass 1,000 career wins. Known for being humble, Lovi preferred to reflect on the people he's coached and coached with, instead of his own accomplishment. "It's special," Lovi told Patch about his accomplishment.  "The best part of this has been the people who have contacted me…

Athlete of the Week

Stearns wins county championship in tennis

Maddie Stearns - Girls Tennis: The sophomore standout for Millburn captured the Essex County singles championship last week, defeating Cedar Grove's Caitlin Flynn. Stearns is now 10-0 and looking like one of the best players in the state, while her team is also in a short discussion for best in the state. Miller Minutes At this point, it's safe to say that the just about every team at Millburn has established a direction for this season. The Millburn girls tennis team is unbeaten and have been basically untouchable this season, dropping only one point so far this season. Things won't really get started for them until the Group 3 playoffs in a few weeks where they will try to win their sixth straight championship. The boys soccer team has …

Millburn Tennis Remains Undefeated

Miller girls improve to 11-0 after win over MKA.

Editor's note: Because of technical difficulties, Patch does not have photos from this match. If you have photos, please consider uploading them here. The Millburn girls tennis team has been bulldozing through the competition early on this season. On Tuesday at MHS, the Millers claimed their latest victims, destroying the visiting Montclair Kimberley Academy girls, 5-0. Entering the contest at 5-3, MKA is one of the better teams in Essex County. But Millburn proved why they are top team in the state, cruising to the win in slightly over an hour, while improving to 11-0 this fall. Sophomore first singles starter, Maddie Stearns, was off of the court first for the Millers, getting past MKA's Julia Perlmotter, (6-1,6-0). Alex Stone, at second…

Elliot Lovi Steps Down at Millburn

Lovi resigns as girls tennis coach after 27 years.

When the Millburn girls tennis season begins this fall, there will be someone very familiar missing. Elliot Lovi will no longer be patrolling the fences at the MHS tennis courts, as the Hall of Fame girls tennis head coach, resigned from his post earlier this week after 27 years of coaching elite level tennis for the Blue and White. Lovi has decided to take on a new challenge, taking over as the girls head coach in Livingston beginning next fall. He is currently the head coach for the state champion Livingston boys, and has been at the helm there for 39 years. Lovi said that coaching both seasons in the same district was a small factor in his decision. “There’s always uncertainty if you’re an out-of-district coach. I figured this was a …

Group 3 Threepeat for Miller Tennis

Millburn boys defeat Holmdel and Moorestown to win Group 3 Championship.

At the beginning of the spring, Millburn boys tennis head coach Bill Wickenheisser said that this Miller team was the deepest team he could remember entering his ninth season at the helm. Millburn’s depth was in full display on Thursday afternoon at Mercer County Park, as the boys wrapped up their third consecutive Group 3 Championship, besting Moorestown 4-1 in the final. On a hot, humid and hazy day Wickenheisser had to go to his bench as two players were forced to retire after the semifinal win over Holmdel. First doubles starter, Mac Johnson left with a 102 degree fever and strep throat, while third singles starter, Tristan Lane had to withdraw due to heat exhaustion. As a result, the normal second doubles team of Nicky Chen-Schmidt …

Millburn Tennis Moves on to Finals

Millers defeat Chatham 5-0 in semis

The Millburn tennis team’s quest for a 26th consecutive state sectional championship continued on Thursday late afternoon, with the locals dispatching Chatham, 5-0, in the North II Group 3 state semifinals. The win could have also served as a small measure of revenge for the Millers, who had their seasons ended by Chatham a year ago, in the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions. Due to steady rain this week and possibly more coming, the match, which was originally scheduled to be played at Millburn High School, was held at the indoor facilities at the Brook Lake Country Club in Florham Park. “The key today was experience,” said Millburn head coach Bill Wickenheisser. “It’s always experience. We didn’t have our full lineup today, but …

Millburn Tennis Falls in County Finals

Millers Lose to Livingston, Wishnow and Johsnon claim doubles title

The Lancers were too much for the Millburn tennis team on Sunday afternoon at Branch Brook Park, in the Essex County finals. Livingston, the defending county champions, got wins from all of three of its singles players and from its second doubles team to beat out Millburn, 4-1. “It’s a little disappointing,” said Millburn head coach Bill Wickenheisser. “You’re going against the number one team in the state and it was closer match than the 4-1 score is going to show.” Millburn’s lone win came from its first doubles team of Jared Wishnow and Mac Johnson, who by virtue of the victory and going undefeated in the county tournament, won the county doubles championship, with the win. “I’m really proud. I would’ve been happier if the team won, but…

Millburn Boys Tennis Drops Season Opener

Delbarton outlasts Millers in close contest

In a rematch of last year’s Tournament of Champions first round, the Millburn tennis team faced off against the Delbarton Green Wave to open the 2011 season. Only this time, the Millers came out on the short end, being edged 3-2 at home by the Morris County School on Saturday afternoon. “I was expecting a great match and we got that absolutely,” said Millburn head coach Bill Wickenheisser. “I was surprised at second and third singles.” With the match all squared at two apiece, the final result came down to the first singles match up between Millburn’s Eric Cohen and Delbarton’s Chase Savage, who had split the first two sets. In the final set, Savage earned a key break point in the fifth game over Cohen, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 …

Eyeing a Threepeat in Group 3

Millburn tennis looks strong headed into the spring

For most teams at Millburn this spring, battling for a playoff spot, winning a couple of games in the state tournament and contending for a conference championship would constitute a great season. But most teams in Millburn aren’t the boys tennis team. The Miller boys have won 25 straight North II Group 3 state sectional championships, have captured the last two Group 3 titles, have been in the final four of the state during the last two seasons and have five of their seven starters returning from last season. “We want to defend all of our state championships and get back to the big show and battle for the Tournament of Champions title,” said Millburn head coach Bill Wickenheisser. “We’re the Group 3 defending champs and state …

Millburn Girls Make it Five Straight Group Titles

The girls tennis team beats Ramapo to win the Group 3 title.

For a short while it looked like the Miller girls tennis team would fall short of its fifth consecutive Group 3 Championship on Wednesday at Mercer County Park. But with their backs up against the wall, Millburn sophomore Tatiana Cherne gutted out a three set win over Ramapo's Katie Nerlino, giving Millburn the 3-2 win. A winner from Nerlino late in the third set gave the Ramapo junior a 5-4 lead at third singles. But Cherne was able to hold serve and then came back from a double game-point deficit to force two deuces and an eventual break serve, giving Cherne a 6-5 lead. Nerlino fought hard in the decisive game, also fighting back from a 40-15 deficit to force two deuces, but Cherne held serve again and held on for a 7-5 third set victory…
