Millburn PD Cracks Down on Seat-Belt Violations

The national Click It or Ticket campaign will run through June 2. Local police will also be on the lookout for people driving while on their cell phones, Millburn officials say.

Millburn Police along with law enforcement throughout Essex County will be cracking down on unbuckled drivers from now until June 2 as part of 2013 Click It or Ticket seat-belt campaign. During this two-week period police will set up seat-belt check points and increase patrols with a zero-tolerance enforcement policy. "Our goal is the safety of the driving public," Capt. Michael Palardy, of the Millburn police, said. "It's not because we want to hurt the public but we want to protect them."  Palardy added, although the main focus for police is seat-belts the department will also locally concentrate on drivers on their cell phones during the campaign. Throughout the county, the law enforcement will focus on rear-seat passengers, which only …

Jill....The "Click It Or Ticket" program is not just another way for towns to generate revenues. It is a national program that has had a positive impact on drivers throughout the country. Further, EVERY NJ town does NOT HAVE its own police department. Many are policed by Sheriffs Departments and the State Police. Several of your Patch comments wreak of sarcasm. What positive ideas do you have?   more ›

When I was walking on the corner of Sagamore and Cypress Streets today, a woman stopped her car to scream at me about a look I supposedly gave her when she apparently drove by earlier. (I had not seen her to give her a look.) I did not engage her but she would not stop or leave (she eventually drove further down and stopped her car in the middle of the street) and I had to call the police. She …   more ›

Actually this story is a little bit off. It began on JFK when a driver called 911 to report someone rearending him at a light, then fleeing the scene. Officer saw the fleeing driver from the other side of the road, then turned across the highway as the driver turned on to the Mall and drove over a curbed island, knocking down the sign. With the officer coming up behind him, he backed off the …   more ›

Public Hearing on Dispatchers Moved to October

The committee will not be ready in time for the Sept. 24 meeting.

At the end of this week's Township Committee meeting, the committee members decided to push the public hearing and presentation about Livingston taking over the police dispatch to the meeting on Oct. 9. Committee members Ted Bourke and Thomas McDermott of the subcommittee researching the issue, said they are still waiting on information from Livingston before a complete report can be presented.  "We can give an update next meeting," Bourke said. The committee said the original proposed move date, Jan. 1, 2013, was "flexible."  Bourke explained the subcommittee still needs to address a few issues and the committee wasn't close to voting on any action.  Since the proposed shared services was announced at the end of July, dispatchers, police …

I would urge town members to fight against the dispatch transfer. I am a former Millburn resident and family member of law enforcement past and present in your community. I currently live in another state which has within the last year required one central dispatch for county and city 911 as required by recent state law. This has been disastrous for communication between departments and …   more ›
