The national Click It or Ticket campaign will run through June 2. Local police will also be on the lookout for people driving while on their cell phones, Millburn officials say.
Millburn Police along with law enforcement throughout Essex County will be cracking down on unbuckled drivers from now until June 2 as part of 2013 Click It or Ticket seat-belt campaign. During this two-week period police will set up seat-belt check points and increase patrols with a zero-tolerance enforcement policy. "Our goal is the safety of the driving public," Capt. Michael Palardy, of the Millburn police, said. "It's not because we want to hurt the public but we want to protect them." Palardy added, although the main focus for police is seat-belts the department will also locally concentrate on drivers on their cell phones during the campaign. Police drove 56-year-old William Clark to Maplewood border to catch NJ Transit bus after being denied rides a at Main Street bus stop and Millburn Train Station.
Millburn police helped a homeless 56-year-old man catch a ride back to Newark on Tuesday after a NJ Transit bus driver and train conductor refused. According to police, an officer responded to a disorderly persons report at about 5:15 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the corner of Main Street and East Willow. Police said an NJ Transit bus driver told them William Clark of Newark was trying to ride the bus without paying. Clark told police, the bus driver wouldn't let him board because of the large carriage he was traveling with. The bus driver refused to let Clark ride the bus and told police, "he is a homeless man and never pays his fare." Springfield woman charged with 10 different counts of possession, driving without a license and driving under the influence on Tuesday afternoon in Wendy's parking lot in Short Hills.
A 33-year-old Springfield woman was arrested Jan. 22 in the Wendy's parking lot after passing out in her car with prescription pills and crack cocaine paraphernalia, Millburn Police said. According to the report, police responded to a 4:30 p.m. call for medical assistance at 778 Morris Turnpike in Short Hills. Police said Leyora Zuberman was hanging over the center console of her car with her eyes closed when they arrived. The report said Zuberman didn't respond to police knocking on the window. The officer then opened the door and tapped her on the shoulder and Zuberman popped up in a daze, police said. When police asked her if she was okay, Zuberman told police she just fell asleep. The 2011 Uniform Crime Report shows an increase of approximately 217 criminal incidents in Millburn.
Millburn crime rose 217 incidents last year from the previous year, according to the 2011 Uniform Crime Report released on Friday. The New Jersey State Police reported statewide criminal reports rose 3-percent from 2010 to 2011. According to the report, Millburn crime increased from 526 in 2010 to 743 in 2011. With 20,149 residents and approximately 58 officers in its police force, Millburn had 22 violent crimes which were split between 12 aggravated assaults, and 10 robberies. The majority of its reported incidents were of a non-violent nature, 721, as the town had 635 reported thefts last year. Also reported were 60 burglaries, and 26 stolen vehicles. Chatham man arrested last week in Mall at Short Hills parking lot suspected of drunk driving.
A 65-year-old Chatham man was arrested on Nov. 23 in Short Hills after attempting to leave the scene of multiple accidents at the mall, Millburn police said. Marco Martins Moreira was arrested around 7:10 p.m. in the parking lot of the Mall at Short Hills after police said he hit a traffic sign and was parked on the island at the intersection of the mall and JFK Parkway North. According to police, when officers approached his Audi A8, Moreira pulled away and drove until he hit a parked Ford pick-up truck, moving it out of its spot. At the end of this week's Township Committee meeting, the committee members decided to push the public hearing and presentation about Livingston taking over the police dispatch to the meeting on Oct. 9. Committee members Ted Bourke and Thomas McDermott of the subcommittee researching the issue, said they are still waiting on information from Livingston before a complete report can be presented. "We can give an update next meeting," Bourke said. The committee said the original proposed move date, Jan. 1, 2013, was "flexible." Millburn Police issued summonses to the driver of an SUV that hit a 30-year-old Maplewood resident last week.
Millburn police have issued a summons to a 37-year-old Millburn man as a result of last week’s Millburn Avenue hit-and-run accident involving an SUV and bicyclist. The driver, Marc Lombardy, was issued summonses for careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident, Millburn police said. According to police, the Maplewood bicyclist, Johnathon Cain, 30, was struck Wednesday around 10 a.m. as Lombardy made a right-hand turn onto Wyoming Avenue from Millburn Avenue. An SUV hit a 30-year-old Maplewood resident and drives away
A Maplewood resident was struck, riding his bicycle to work on Millburn Avenue, around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, by a black SUV that left the scene, police said. John Cain, 30, said he was heading toward downtown Millburn when the SUV made a right-hand turn on Wyoming Avenue without a turn signal. Cain said he managed to jump off his bicycle after it was hit, avoiding any injuries. He said, after the accident, he exchanged words with the driver before the SUV drove off. "The guy in the SUV said he had the right of way," Cain said. "I said you just hit me dude, I'm calling the cops and he took off." Millburn Police is asking for the town's help in identifying this alleged burglar.
The Millburn Police Department is investigating an Aug. 1 burglary to a residence on Highview Road in Short Hills. The police department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the man pictured above who is a person of interest in this case. The man is believed to be operating a a late-model white Nissan Versa. He may be a contractor in the area. The police department did not release additional details about the burglary. Officers twice saved lives performing CPR, and foiled a credit card skimming plot at a local gas station.
The Essex County Police Benevolent Association has honored several Millburn police officers for their good police work in foiling a major fraud scheme and for saving lives of two people in cardiac arrest. In the two life-saving cases, police resusitated people who were in cardiac arrest, giving them CPR and shocking them with a defibulator - one at Joe's American Bar & Grill at The Mall at Short Hills and one at ShopRite in Millburn. In both cases, they were credited with saving the lives of those they assisted. In addition, four police officers were honored for their work in arresting two Russian immigrants who were installing a credit card skimmer at the Sunoco station in Millburn.
