Inspired by a child's question, the editor ponders what the world would be like if God was a mother.
When my son, Jack, was three years old he asked me if God had feet. Seeing how thrown I was by that question (does God have feet?) he softballed me with this follow-up: how do we know God is a father and not a mother? Instinctively, I answered, “Because no mother would ever create order out of chaos and then go and undo it by creating man." “Also," I continued, "Two days tops to create a universe because no mother has the luxury of seven days to get anything done." His question did force me to think what the world might be like if God was a mother. And so I wrote: If God Was a Mother, her Commandments would most likely read: Do not waste thine time carving what I say onto stone tablets for no one will read them and, undoubtedly, someone …

What Mom taught me
If you've read my profile or had a conversation with me, you'll know I'm a sports fan. And believe it or not, it's my mom's fault. No, she wasn't one of those sports parents who forced me to play sports, although I played soccer and then field hockey when I was a kid. Instead, she denied my family dinner in 1986. Most of the Mets playoff games were on in the afternoon and Mom wouldn't cook dinner, which was normally on the table by 5:30 p.m., until the game was over. My dad still won't let my mother forget that he was "starving to death" because of her. Me? I just sat there and watched the games. That began my love affair with baseball and the New York Mets. Dad was there to teach me the finer points of the game (and we argue today about …

The bakery's cupcakes have become popular in Millburn-Short Hills
Bella's Bakery isn't named after its owner. Instead, it's named after owner Janet Antico's daughter, who has a nut allergy. The bakery, which opened last fall on Essex Street, sells nut-free baked goods, and it's most known in Millburn-Short Hills for its cupcakes, which range from classic yellow with chocolate frosting to red velvet. While the retail shop is Antico's first, the bakery has essentially existed since Bella was in kindergarten. She is now a student at Millburn Middle School. Antico never intended to be a pastry chef, although it's something she learned to love, but rather a caterer. She left her job in finance and went to culinary school in London when Bella was born and later learned of her nut allergy. Once they moved back …

Many restaurants serving their regular menu
Reservations at some of Millburn's most popular downtown restaurants are getting tight for Mother's Day, but there are still some seats available on Sunday. And while some restaurants will have a prix fixe menu, many of the downtown restaurants also will serve from their regular menu. At Basilico, dinner will be served from noon to 8 p.m. with the regular dinner menu with some Mother's Day specials. There is space still available Sunday, but 80 percent of the reservations have been filled. Cafe Monet is one of the few restaurants advertising a prix fixe menu. The restaurant is advertising on a chalkboard on the sidewalk that it opens at 11 a.m. with a $26.95 menu. At Martini Bistro and Bar, will open at 11:30 a.m. with its regular menu. …
