Openings and Closings: Carol's Collection Is Back

Also, Style'N Canine is coming to Short Hills.

Carol's Collection is back open in downtown Millburn in the space that was once occupied by Netef Gallery. Netef Gallery closed at the end of 2010, and Carol's Collection opened within the last week on Main Street. The store features "designer costume jewelry and handbags," but there are other accessories, like scarves, available for purchase. A dog groomer also is coming to Short Hills. Style'N Canine received approval from the zoning board of adjustment earlier this month to open shop at 36 Chatham Road, which is across the street from the Short Hills train station. Grooming will be by appointment only, according to the information provided to the zoning board, and there will be a retail section of the 825-square-foot shop.

Bhakti Barn Brings Yoga Downtown

The yoga studio is the first stand-alone facility in Millburn-Short Hills.

Betsy Davis and Christine Gatti met at a yoga class in Manhattan, and both area residents were commuting into New York either for classes or, in Davis' case, to teach classes.  They got to talking about how there was not a stand-alone yoga studio in Millburn-Short Hills. And thus Bhakti Barn Yoga Studio was born. The two women co-own the 8-month-old studio, which is located on Spring Street in downtown Millburn. Davis has been practicing yoga for 12 years and teaching for 10. “I was going through a major transition in my life, and recovering from a breakup," she said. "I found that yoga helped me.”  The other six teachers at Bhakti Barn have all trained under Davis. They practice Vinayssa yoga, which is a style of yoga where movement …

Etc. Helps You Rethink Your Home Design

The home design center is part of Suburban Paint on Main Street.

Maura Buckley grew up in Millburn's Wyoming section, so when she came up with the idea of Etc. it was natural to take her concept to a former elementary school classmate, Steve Marketta, whose family has owned Suburban Paint since 1948. "Our paths have crossed many times," Buckley said. "Suburban used to be a guy's club, and it has a loyal following.  But Steve and I thought there could be even more opportunities." Her objective was to come in and upgrade the shop's services. Working with Jane Maguire Gross, her friend and business partner, Buckley offers a slew of services under one roof—almost anything under a creative umbrella. Etc. works with a tightly edited group of kitchen designers, artisans and artists. "We bill by the hour and …

What about the leases ? Those two spaces (ex-C Gaming World) and (ex-Sample Sale) they have been vacant for months, i heard through the grapevine that two leases are tough and/or unrealistic, that will attract short, unmotivated, and hurry/shelves sales businesses. I think the real question are those landlords paying taxes/fees for open spaces ? Are they doing anything to bring business or just …   more ›

Another Italian Restaurant Proposed for Downtown

La Pergola would be located at 120 Essex St.

In what seems to be a summer of Italian restaurants, another one has been proposed for downtown Millburn. Driola LLC of New Providence has proposed to open La Pergola at 120 Essex St., which was once a bridal salon near the corner of Essex and Lackawanna Place. The space has been vacant for some time. The proposal is going to the Planning Board for review at its next meeting on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. The restaurant would have 80 seats, according to the plans filed at Town Hall, and the owners are seeking a variance for parking. LearningRX Offers Training, Not Tutoring

The new learning center is open in Short Hills and will hold an open house on Saturday.

If a student is struggling in school, local parents may decide to send them to a tutor to help them do better in class. But a new learning service in Short Hills is striving to correct the core problems that may cause a student to have trouble in school. "We are not a tutoring service," said Monica Spence, LearningRX director. "We start at the core." Children work on core skills, like reading, in kindergarten through second grade. But if there are hiccups and problems in those early grades, they never really are fixed, she said. "They may not reach their full potential," she said. Spence said her daughter was struggling in school after working with lots of one-on-one tutors, which had minimal results. She took her to the LearningRX center …
