[VIDEO] Jean Gajano talks to Patch about the concert set for Saturday, March 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Summit.
Back for its fifth year in a row, the Kids Rock for Vision Concert is set to bring down the house in support of the Short Hills nonprofit. The concert will take place on Saturday, March 2 from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Summit. Kids Rock has raised over $30,000 since it started in 2009 for the nonprofit New Eyes for the Needy located in Short Hills. All proceeds from concert ticket sales and donations go towards the purchase of new prescription eyeglasses for poor children living in the United States. Summit resident and Morristown-Beard senior, Will Taggart, is the event chair for the third year, and is again working with fellow students and Summit residents George Psichos and Andrew McGann. A recent report says Short Hills and Millburn have helped New Jersey get to number eight ranking in charitable donations.
New Eyes for the Needy has been in Short Hills for over 80 years and the non-profit organization said it's thanks to time and money the residents donate to its cause. "Without the support of town's residents volunteering or donating money or merchandise, New Eyes would not be what it is today," the Community Relations Coordinator of the organization, Jean Gajano, said. In a recent study by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, released on Monday, Short Hills ranks 208 out of 28,725 towns nationwide for contributions. "I think the people in our community are aware, humanitarian and are charitable," Mayor Sandra Haimoff said. "They don't just volunteer in various organizations, they also donate." The generosity from the residents helped New Eyes …

If you're headed to the Fabulous Finds Sale at New Eyes for the Needy, you'll find an assortment of jewelry donated by Stony Jewelry of New York City. "This is a tremendous donation. There are literally hundreds of new bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings that will be available for sale at our Fabulous Finds Boutique over the next several weeks," said Jean Gajano, community relations coordinator for New Eyes, in a press release. "Our volunteers have been busy pricing the jewelry and we are eager to sell these beautiful pieces to the public." Stony Jewelry, located at 389 Fifth Ave. in Manhattan, contacted New Eyes in December about donating overstocked jewelry, according to a New Eyes press release. "We never imagined that the size of…

Fabulous Finds boutique has a long history in the community.
You're never too old to make a difference. New Eyes for the Needy founder, the late Julia Lawrence Terry, is proof. In 1932 Terry, a Short Hills resident in her 60's volunteered at a Red Cross food depot to provide relief for people during the Great Depression. When individuals came in to the Red Cross for food, she realized that they were having trouble filling out the forms because they couldn't see.
She began collecting eye glasses in Short Hills to distribute among these people. It soon became apparent, however, the glasses she collected wouldn't be a perfect match every time as each prescription is different. She also noticed most of the eye glasses she collected were framed in silver or gold. She got her smelter's license in …

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal took time away from his schedule to visit New Eyes for the Needy on May 24 to meet with volunteers and staff, but it wasn't an unusual visit for him. Gyllenhaal's connection to the Short Hills nonprofit goes back many years. "I've had really poor vision ever since I was a little kid—my mom first took me to the doctor because I was smacking into walls—and every time my prescription changed, we gave my old glasses to New Eyes" Gyllenhaal said to InStyle magazine last year, according to a New Eyes for the Needy press release. "So when I started looking for a cause that I had a strong visceral connection to, I thought of it and wanted to help bring awareness to its work." "Jake has been a great advocate for New Eyes for …

The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey awarded Short Hills-based New Eyes for the Needy a $7,500 grant to purchase new prescription eyeglasses for disadvantaged residents of Essex, Morris and Union counties. "We are so thankful to The Healthcare Foundation for investing in New Eyes' mission to give clear sight to poor children and adults in New Jersey," said Susan M. Dyckman, New Eyes for the Needy executive director. "The foundation's grant will make sure that 125 people get the glasses and clear sight they need to enjoy a better quality of life on their journey toward self-sufficiency." New Eyes helped 730 poor New Jersey residents to see clearly in 2009-10. It's 18 percent of the total number of eyeglasses purchased by New Eyes …

Local kids help raise nearly $9,000 to buy new glasses with a charity rock concert.
Glasses and hard rock teamed up on Saturday for the second annual Kids Rock for Vision concert to raise money for New Eyes for the Needy. The concert, held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Summit, featured young musicians from the area strumming power chords and wailing in the vein of Axel Rose for a crowd of friends, family and rock enthusiasts. "It's just an awesome time to spend with your friends and family listening to local bands," said Sam Taggart, a senior at Morristown Beard and chair of the event. "Last year we raised almost $8,000 and I had no idea we could do so much for an organization with just a concert." This year, with the addition of more bands, the concert brought in $8,701, nearly a $1,000 increase from last year, …

New Eyes for the Needy has been located at its current home since 1961.
New Eyes for the Needy has been on the upper end of Millburn Avenue since the 1960s, but that building was home to a beauty salon first. According to the online history of the non-profit organization New Eyes for the Needy, "In 1958 New Eyes for the Needy was incorporated in New Jersey as a non-profit charitable organization. A new headquarters at 549 Milburn Avenue was purchased in 1961, with a downstairs extension added in 1963 and an upstairs addition completed in 1967 for use as a Jewelry and Giftware Showroom." The history of New Eyes can be found on the organization's Web site and it further states the organization "was founded in 1932 by the late Julia Lawrence Terry of Short Hills, N.J." Kathey Coombs and Mary McIntyre run the weekly New Eyes for the Needy sale.
If it's a Thursday, you're sure to find Kathey Coombs and Mary McIntyre at New Eyes for the Needy. You'll find the two Millburn-Short Hills residents among the jewelry cases upstairs for the weekly Fabulous Finds sale. Volunteers for New Eyes for seven years, they chair the sale together. And at its recent fund-raiser, New Eyes for the Needy honored the two volunteers for their work. Coombs grew up in Short Hills and her mother would work at New Eyes as part of her work with the Junior League. "I can't say what she did, though," she said. Then seven years ago she was looking for new volunteer work when she joined the Fabulous Finds sale as a pricer and eventually as a sales clerk. McIntyre said volunteering only requires two hours per …

This fact is so much more important and says so much more about our community than having some magazine rank our MHS 8 instead of 1. What a great lesson to be teaching our next generation. Thanks for this article.   more ›
