'Newsies' Gets Eight Tony Nominations

The musical that premiered at the Paper Mill, has been nominated for best musical.

Newsies, the exhilarating musical about the 1899 New York City newsboys' strike that premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse and quickly made its way to Broadway, garned eight Tony Award nominations today, including Best Musical.  Paper Mill Playhouse's Producing Artistic Director Mark Hoebee said he is thrilled to see Newsies' nominations, but not surprised. "It's such a great show, and everyone who saw it here just loved it," he said. "We are so proud to have had it premier here. It was the first musical in our 73-year history to premier here and go right to Broadway. It was ground-breaking for us." Paper Mill Strikes Another Hit

Just in time for baseball season, a darn good production of "Damn Yankees"

The Boys of Summer have arrived early this year at Paper Mill Playhouse, which has proven to be a hitter’s ballpark with a playoff-quality production of Damn Yankees. Director Mark S. Hoebee and his splendid lineup don’t quite knock this beloved musical comedy out of the park, but they clearly show they have some game. Certainly, the press-opening crowd on Sunday night cheered as though it had just witnessed a dominant victory. Hoebee’s first smart decision — most likely wearing his artistic director uniform at the time — was to skip the changes seen in the 1994 revival and stick to the classic 1955 original, which made stars out of Ray Walston and especially Gwen Verdon as the devilish seductress, Lola. Fifty-seven years later, the …

'Boeing Boeing' Takes Off at Paper Mill

Audience finds a lot to laugh about with madcap '60s theatrical romp.

In keeping with the current cultural fascination with sex in the ‘60s, The Paper Mill Playhouse brings theatergoers Boeing Boeing, which captures both the innocence of an era when all the sex was insinuated and the wild slapstick and spit takes of a madcap romance. The beginning of first act, while the plot is set up, is a little slow, but toward the end of the first act and during the second, the audience laughed uproariously as the obvious unfolded. Bernard (played by Matt Walton), is engaged to three women from different countries all of whom work as air-hostesses (known today as flight attendants) for different airlines. They all have different schedules, and, as far as Bernard’s concerned, it works out perfectly. Until it doesn’t. …
