Just drove by the site again and say what you will, but this parking lot is beautiful as well as a much needed strategy for addressing parking needs in town.   more ›

Essex Street Closed Tuesday

In downtown Millburn, Essex Street will close from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, between Lackawanna Avenue to Main Street.

Construction on the downtown Millburn parking deck will close and limit parking on Essex Street next week, according to township officials. Essex Street will close from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, between Lackawanna Avenue to Main Street. After 1 p.m. and throughout Wednesday, Jan. 9, Essex Street will be limited to one or two lane traffic.  Parking will also be prohibited on Essex Street between Lackwanna Avenue and Lot 1, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. The parking deck construction crew will be using a crane that requires the road closure, the township said.

Good question. I'm also curious what's going to happen when they open the parking facility. The entrance is so close to the street that one can't help but think the lines to get into and out of the lot will create traffic problems during certain times of day. Perhaps they have already thought that through. If so, I'd like to hear how they will curb congestion. That part of Essex Street is already…   more ›

New Parking Patterns in Town

The new Parking deck will add three stories of parking for downtown Millburn but has temporary changed the parking patterns in town.

Contruction started this week on a new three-level parking deck, with 400 parking spots, on the municipal parking lot two, at the corner of Lackawanna Place and Essex Street. Since this new project won't finish until June 2013, the town has a temporary parking plan for visitors to downtown but it will add 277 spots when completed.  Please see attached image for new patterns.  “There will be four phases of construction,” Gordon said, in a press release.  “The current parking lot will be bulldozed, after which the construction crew will pour the Deck’s concrete foundation.  We expect this work to be complete by Christmas.  During the third stage of construction, the crew will erect the support columns, which will be followed by building the …

Township Moves Ahead With Parking Deck on Lot #2

Committee votes for $8.1 million plan that would increase parking for commuters, residents.

The township committee voted Tuesday to move forward with plans for a parking deck, and has decided it will go on Municipal Parking Lot #2, located at the corner of Lackawanna Place and Essex Street. The committee also voted to award the professional contract to Tim Haahs & Associates, an architecture and engineering firm that specializes in parking. Vice President Jim Zullo has presented options for Lot #2 and for Lot #7, which was also under consideration. Phase 2 of the project will now get underway and will include the preparation of architectural, engineering/design, and construction documents ready for public bidding, bid analysis and construction administration services, according to committee member James Suell, who serves on the …

Clarified as to Pucci. However, 20% being temporarily transferred is a lot of cars if that is the source for all of the cars displaying no permits and I certainly can wonder aloud why Pucci and others need to do all that transferring, three times a month or whatever. In fifteen years of parking we have transferred a permit exactly zero times.   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Op-Ed: Letter to Township on Parking Deck

Resident to Township: Re-think downtown parking solutions.

Editor's Note: The Township Committee meets tomorrow to decide whether to move forward with parking deck plans and if so, which option is best for Millburn. This open letter was also sent to the Township Committee. Dear Members of the Township Committee, At the recent public hearing regarding the Phase I designs for a parking garage on either Lot 2 (Essex and Lackawanna) or Lot 7 (Glen Avenue, Millburn train station) one of the attendees asked, “What is the best solution to reach our goal?”  I would ask a somewhat different question, “What is our goal?” As presented to the architects and engineers in the RFP,  it was to assess building a parking garage to address the commuter traffic that is currently handled by the valet parking and, on …

Just read about the newly found spaces at recycling center & rimback which is a great find and would seem to nullify the need for a parking deck -- right?? How do we kill the deck? Who do we vote for? Who's not giving us lip service? What's the real status of the deck? Is it just going to phase 2 planning or do these self-servers on the TC really don't give a crap about what the township thinks? …   more ›

Letter: Is a Parking Deck Necessary?

The writer disputes that there needs to be hundreds of additional parking spaces.

Last week, the first in a series of meetings about a proposed parking deck in Millburn was held at the library.  I think it is fair to say that most people at the meeting opposed building a parking deck at the Glen Avenue site.  There seemed to be a general acceptance, however, of the idea that we are running out of commuter parking space and Mr. Tillotson and Mr. Suell, having already hired a consultant to look into sites for construction, seemed convinced that a deck is the solution.  But before we rush off to spend $5-10 million to build a structure or pay more money to a consultant to design it, we need to take a step back and see if we really need one. When the last parking study was completed in 2008, there seemed to be consensus …

For someone running for Township Committee Mr. Humphrys appears to have very little knowledge of all that has happened in the past, or what is happening presently. Regardless of what growth there may be in the future there is a problem right now. While valet parking was a brilliant idea that works well it never was meant to be a permanent solution. We are paying yearly an amount close to what the…   more ›
