Jeanne Kolva, author of Olmsted Parks in New Jersey, will speak at the West Caldwell Public Library on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. Kolva will discuss South Mountain Reservation along with other Essex County Parks, which were designed by the famed Olmsted Brothers landscape design firm founded by the son and stepson of the creator of New York's Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted. The Essex County Parks System became the first county park system in the country with the creation of Branch Brook Park in Newark in 1895, according to Essex County Parks. The county now owns more than 20 parks, multiple reservations and three golf courses. Kolva has a master’s in art history and is a graduate of Drew University’s Historic Preservation Certificate…

Parks to be shut down by noon on Sunday, officials say.

All state parks and historic sites are scheduled to be shut down at noon on Sunday in preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin announced today. According to Martin, safety concerns are forcing the closure and those who are camping now at state facilities across the state are being advised to prepare to leave those sites by mid-day Sunday. Martin also said those with reservations for next week are advised that parks may be closed through the entire week. Persons with reservations will be called by DEP personnel to reschedule their visits to state parks. After the storm passes through the state, the parks and historic sites will be assessed and re-opened on a case-by-case …

Most of the work has been done at Gero Park, including on the baseball fields.
If you visit some of Millburn-Short Hills' parks this spring, you may see some changes. Most of those changes are at Gero Park and are still ongoing through the spring, but many have been completed. Some of the most noticible work is being done by the Millburn-Short Hills Youth Baseball league, said Recreation Director Robert Hogan. The work includes dugouts, backstops, bleachers and fencing. The project is funded by the youth baseball league through donations. The tennis courts have been renovated and painted for play. The renovations were completed last fall, Hogan said. Plans are to use funds for Taylor Park fitness court and Gero Park roller hockey improvements
Town officials have filed the paperwork to receive a $220,000 county grant for park projects. The Township Committee approved the grant application Tuesday night, but James Suell, a committee member, said the paperwork had already been filed. The grant program was announced in January, and the grant dollars are being offered to each community throughout the county for park projects. The application was due March 13, and the grant announcement is due on April 17. A fitness court at Taylor Park is included in the projects submitted as part of the grant.
