South Mountain Poets Celebrates Anthology Sunday

"Off Line" features 56 New Jersey poets, and there will be a poetry reading to celebrate the book.

There are extraordinary poets writing and reading in these hills and, by hills, we mean New Jersey's First and Second Mountain in the Watchung Range—also the Kittatinny's in Sussex County, the Ramapos in Bergen, as well as poets writing in flatter parts of the state. South Mountain Poets celebrates 56 of these poets in its new, 86 poem anthology "Off Line," the fifth book it has published since "Rising" in 1987. Right now, 38 poets are scheduled to read at a celebratory book launch at the New Jersey Arts Incubator (NJAI) in West Orange Sunday at 2 p.m. Expect to hear a gamut of themes and approaches from the readers, many very well known in poetry circles. "There will be a great variety of styles and voices, from the sublime to the surreal…

Millburn Poet Featured on Ellis Island

Joe Martino is "humbled and honored" to hear that his poem is displayed at the Bob Hope Memorial Library on Ellis Island.

Despite living in the metro area for all of his 72 years, Martino has visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island only once, about 10 years ago. Still, he is incredibly proud to say his poem is on display at the world-famous historical site and hopes to have an opportunity to see it in person. "I am very flattered," he said. "I'm wondering if, and it would be great, if I'm the only Jersey resident that …

Poets Speak from Heart at Slam

Rockn' Joe holds a poetry slam and is planning more open mic events.

A crowd of locals gathered for a poetry slam at Rockn' Joes in downtown Millburn on Sunday night, hosted by Irvington resident and wordsmith Kalita "Se'lah" Cox. Performances included Cox, a Rockn' Joes employee and two recent Millburn High School graduates. The featured artist of the evening was local writer Nasir the Poet. The first reader was graduate Sophie Soloway, who recited two original poems. Soloway was cheered on by friends, including fellow poet Amanda Jacir. Next was Newark-based poet Lefthand Gilliam—"one of the fiercest dressed people I know," Cox said. Gilliam also recited original poems, interspersed with singing. Cox followed her friend, performing an ode to her notebook and the craft of writing. "My pen makes love to the…
