Nothing busts up a town's fraternity more than having these "Contests!" A Best Pizza contest in Nutley started a Hatfield/McCoy feud that goes to this day. Can't we just support all our local hardworking businesses , trades people, and professionals? It's like when Aunt Bea challenged Howard Sprague for the Town Council. It tore Mayberry in half! Can't we all just get along?   more ›

POLL: What's Your Favorite Deli?

What's a great place to get sandwiches where you live?

Perhaps it's the fresh bread, savory meats and cheeses or homemade salads? Maybe it's the personality of the folks behind the counter. But everybody has a deli that's special to them. I mean, it's New Jersey after all. Maybe you like to get pastrami on rye, mozzarella and prosciutto, or fresh turkey on a roll. But whatever you order, you keep going back there for a reason. This week, share with us the name of your favorite deli. And, if you like, tell us why you like it in the comments section. We'll publish the results on Friday. And, in the meantime, bon appetit!

How about a 'round roll with Russian' from the Millburn Deli - or a Sloppy Joe when it was 50 cents and the deli had just moved from across the street?   more ›

Poll: What's Your Favorite 'Staycation'?

You can have a great "Staycation" right here in Essex County. What do you like to do?

Sure, going on vacation is fun. But it's also expensive and involves a lot of driving, waiting at airports, sand in your clothes and paying for restaurant meals. Sometimes, it's far more relaxing just taking some time off close to home. The term "staycation" has become popular in recent years as people take a second look around at fun places to go and fun things to do neaby. It saves gas money, travel time and you can still get home in time to watch the next episode of Game of Thrones. Maybe your idea of a great "staycation" is a spa day, followed by a good meal and a night out to hear some music. For families with younger children, a staycation may include a day trip to the zoo or museum, some pizza and a cold beer at your favorite pub. …

What's Your Favorite Bagel Place?

New Jersey residents love their bagels with a passion. Where do you get your favorite bagels?

Some people think a bagel is a plain old bread product in the shape of a circle and that every bagel is the same. However, New Jersey residents know that is just not true.  A staple food of the state, bagels can come in all different types, sizes and shapes. Some people like to have seeds on their bagel, such as sesame or poppy or the ever popular “everything bagel” which includes a mixture of it all. Some people like their bagels to be sweet with chocolate chips or raisons or even blueberries.  Some like their bagels with a kick and buy the types with onions or garlic; a few places even make them with jalapenos. Then there are the old classics such as pumpernickel and egg bagels. Then there is the size and density of the bagel. Some …

The food prep areas appear no more dirty than your typical deli, but the walls, floors, ceiling, tables, chairs, etc, have been dirty and in disrepair for years. But walk into Bagel Chateau on the weekend and there is always a long line of customers.   more ›
