Excellent restaurant choices are recommended for Readers' Choice poll.
From one end of Essex County to the other, diners can get a great sushi meal wherever they go. Patch readers weighed in last week and chose their favorite sushi restaurants. The results were as follows: In Montclair, Dai Kichi tops the list for readers’ favorite sushi in town, followed by Toro and then Nori. The comings and goings of local businesses around town.
2011 brought a lot of movement among businesses in Millburn and Short Hills. Despite a tough economy that brought an end to some businesses, many optimistic entrepreuers opened new business, and other shops and restaurants are in the works. After a spell with a lot empty storefronts downtown, Millburn is now at about 85 percent occupancy, said outgoing president of Downtown Millburn John Buchholz. New stores have opened and other stores and restaurants are moving. And Tinga is still working to re-open after being wiped out by the raging Rahway floodwaters from Irene on Aug. 28. "We're excited about what's going on downtown," said Downton Millburn's new executive director Lisa Hackett, whose offices are moving from the location on Millburn…

NJ Monthly readers vote on their favorite places statewide.
We all know Millburn has a quaint downtown with an abundance of chic shops, excellent restaurants and a quality live theater, and now the rest of the state knows it, too. This year several Millburn businesses came in as runners up in the NJ Monthly magazine’s Best of New Jersey reader voted contest. In addition, magazine readers chose all four locations of Walter Bauman Jewelers (one is in Short Hills) as the best jewelry store in the state, offering designer lines and plenty of gold, silver and diamonds. (Other locations are in Union, Clifton, West Orange.) And while not in Millburn or Short Hills, the Wine Library on Morris Avenue is close enough to mention that it was chosen as best wine shop in the state. You can read about all the …

Millburn-Short Hills restaurants are in the middle of offering special events and deals on meals as part of the first restaurant week. As part of it, Q.J. Green Garden offered a Korean barbeque lunch on Wednesday. Meats and fish were grilled on a hot stone at the table with a variety of sauces. They were followed with hot pots of seafood. There also were salads as part of the meal. Restaurant week, which is sponsored by the Millburn-Short Hills Business Coalition, continues through Sunday. The Dining Room at the Hilton Short Hills will make a three-course dinner available during Restaurant Week at $35 per person. Choices will include vegetable or seafood appetizer, seafood, chicken or beef main course and a dessert favorite. Benihana will …

The European-style cafe is at the corner of Main and Essex streets.
Franco Ammirati hopes to bring the best of European cafes to a corner shop in downtown Millburn. Cafe Luna offers everything a European cafe would offer, except alcohol, the Springfield resident said. The small cafe at the corner of Main and Essex streets offers sandwiches, salads and fresh-made Italian pastry. But it's the gelato and sorbeto Ammirati is most proud. They're made by hand at Cafe Luna. Some of the food on the menu includes an Italian cheese plate, a Caprese salad and Cesear salad. One of the more popular sandwiches contains mozzarella, proscuitto, tomato and basil. The dessert menu includes tiramisu and tortino, a warm chocolate cake with chocolate and vanilla gelato. "I want to give people the best food, the best gelato," …

Cafe Monet lets diners build their own menu combination.
Café Monet is a quaint bistro ripe with character. Large, colorful paintings of fruit and the French countryside adorn the walls of the two dining rooms. These rooms are separated by a solid wall, which creates the feeling of two small cafes that share nothing more than an entryway. Comfortable booths line the perimeter, but one of the rooms can easily be rearranged to accommodate groups of eight or more. The server seemed to be part of the atmosphere. He spoke in a heavy, authentic French accent. He was attentive and knew the menu well. As we debated our main course options, he was able to offer on-point suggestions, from which plates to combine to which wines would complement each dish. Unfortunately, the wine will have to wait until our…

Fresh ingredients abound on the sizable menu.
Basilico serves up tasteful dishes sure to please any palate. The dining room was already packed when we arrived around 7 p.m., and continued to see a steady stream of customers throughout the night. Owner Mario DeMarco greeted us at the door, as he does with all of his guests. His presence was felt throughout the evening. We were seated at a comfortable but small table along the wall. The long dining room has booth tables along a mirrored wall, leading in to a separate square dining room. There are also several round tables to accommodate groups. The pricey menu is enormous, making it difficult to decide where to begin. The antipasti selection alone includes 16 options, such as Tartare di Tonno ($11.95), Calamari e Vegetali Fritti ($10.…

The new Asian fusion restaurant is on Millburn Avenue in the old IHOP building.
It seems like it's been a revolving door of restaurants in the former IHOP building on Millburn Avenue, but the owners of Q.J. Green Garden hope to change that. The Asian fusion restaurant will hold its official grand opening on Thursday, although the restaurant has been open to test the kitchen, said Jason Wang, whose father owns the restaurant. Wang owns several restaurants in Massachusetts. Q. J. Green Garden is located where the Thai Grill was located until earlier this summer. "We need to make a change here," he said of the location's revolving door of restaurants in recent years. "We have greener food. We make it a little bit special." The grand opening will feature a number of specials, and Wang said they have been visiting area …
