The Millburn Township Committee will determine which items to add to its agenda now and into the future.
Rather than giving a specific plan to improve downtown, the Community Revitalization Committee has presented a set of action items for the near- and long-term to help the Millburn Township Committee set its agenda. Daniel Baer, a township committee member, presented the items during Tuesday's committee meeting. There was no discussion with the revitalization committee on when the action items could take place, but they were priority items, he said. Further discussion on the steps by the township committee is expected to take place in the new year. Robert Tillotson, a township committee member, said everyone recognizes the downtown needs some help, but it all costs money. "But we need ideas and concepts to get us motivated otherwise we …

There could be reports on both issues in the first half of 2010.
Downtown revitalization and commuter parking were two of the issues the Township Committee tackled during the last year, and public reports are due next year. Township Committee members gave reports on the projects on which they worked over the last year during the meeting Tuesday night. Robert Tillotson, who worked with fellow committee members on downtown revitalization, said there could be a report issued in the first quarter of 2010. He reviewed what had happened in the last year, including the organizational meeting last June. The group of 70 volunteers worked on four subcommittees—sustainability and environmental issues; financial and economic issues; zoning, land use and historical issues; and parking, traffic and pedestrian issues…

Reader responds to Dan Baer and Jim Suell's letter on the issue.

To the Editor: As I began to read the recent letter from Township Committee Democrats Daniel Baer and James F. Suell posted on thealternativepress.com (Editor's note: The letter also ran on Millburn-Short Hills Patch) regarding the supposed “misleading assertions made to the press by candidate Haimoff regarding downtown development,” I couldn’t help thinking that I had heard this somewhere before. Then I remembered a letter to the editor of The Item written by Dan Baer and published on October 9, 2008. It starts like this, “For over two and one-half years, I have taken the high road by not responding to misrepresentations spun by Committeewoman Ellen Steinberg in the numerous Viewpoints she has penned for The Item of Millburn and Short…

Ideas and plans from the committee analyzing downtown Millburn improvements could come soon.
The Downtown Revitalization Committee is inching closer to having details ready for public consumption. The land use subcommittee has prepared some ideas on how to improve the downtown area, and those plans are now being vetted by the other subcommittees, said Daniel Baer, Township Committee member who is helping oversee the process. Robert Tillotson is the other committee member involved with the project. "They've come up with some really good ideas," Baer said. "We'll bring everyone together in a week or so and get comments. Then we'll decide when we want to go out to the public with it." Earlier this year a committee of about 70 people was formed to create a plan for downtown revitalization. The committee was formed after a formal …

The subcommittee will have a presentation ready late this month or in early October.
An analysis of land use in downtown Millburn-Short Hills will be the big first step that will drive much of the rest of the township's downtown revitalization process, according to committee members working on the redevelopment plan. The Land Use Subcommittee hopes to have a presentation ready for the Revitalization Committee in late September or early October, said Daniel Baer, a Township Committee member working on the project. Once the land use committee brings forward its proposal, which may include recommendations on the type of growth it thinks should occur downtown, many of the other subcommittees can work on their proposals, he said. "It will drive the rest of the plan," he said. "(The committee) also had a lot of momentum." …

The Revitalization Committee continues to meet to work on a plan to improve Millburn's downtown.
The fall again could be dominated by discussion of how to improve Millburn's downtown area. The various subcommittees for the Revitalization Committee are meeting and working this summer on a new plan to revitalize the downtown area. They are analyzing sustainability and environmental issues; financial and economic issues; zoning, land use and historical issues; and parking, traffic and pedestrian issues. The group of 70 people held an organizational meeting in June. Dan Baer, one of the Township Committee members serving as a liaison for the process, said they hope to gather representatives from each of the committees for a second meeting in early September about their progress. The first ideas for public discussion could come as early as…

New committee holds first meeting to organize
The room was full of people interested in downtown revitalization, and they had an assortment of different backgrounds and areas of focus. But the group—which in total numbers about 70 people—will be responsible for forming a plan that could change downtown Millburn. The new Revitalization Committee held its first meeting Tuesday night in an effort to organize for the process that could take six months to complete. The Township Committee rejected a plan for downtown redevelopment late last year, but it committed to not letting the issue die and to look at some form of revitalization for the town's business center. Dan Baer and Robert Tillotson, two committee members, will oversee the process, and Baer told the group Tuesday night that they…

With nearly 70 people on the committee, there will be plenty of public input
One of my first tastes of Millburn-Short Hills was a redevelopment public meeting last November. I sat in the back corner of the library meeting room, which was packed with people. It was standing room only. And the meeting went on for hours with lots of people having their say on what they didn't like about the plan, which was later rejected. There was a common theme among the people who spoke. They didn't think there was enough public involvement. The process that led to the now-rejected plan was before my time, so I don't have first-hand knowledge of how much involvement there was before those November meetings. Now, there's a new round of examining downtown and how to improve it, including a new term for the process. It's "…

Everyone who applied to participate in the new process will serve
Township Committee members were seeking more public involvement in the next round of downtown revitalization planning, and they got it. Nearly 70 people requested to serve on one of the newly formed subcommittees, and every person will be allowed to serve, said Dan Baer, Township Committee member. Baer and Robert Tillotson, another committee member, are the two members overseeing the new committee. The duo will sit down this week to hash out the final details before the work starts. "I'm very excited that there was so much interest," Baer said. Many of the people who stepped forward to serve are not people who have expressed interest in the past, he said, which is great. The criticism of last fall's redevelopment process, which the …

Post cards going in the mail this week
The Township Committee's Downtown Revitalization Executive Committee is still looking for volunteers for its subcommittees, and residents will be receiving post cards with details soon. Town officials are currently preparing to boil down the information about the new committee onto a postcard that will be mailed to all Millburn-Short Hills residents. The postcard will also point people to the town's Web site. Town Administrator Tim Gordon said officials are examining how to create a way for interested residents to submit their information to volunteer via the Web site. People would also be able to send questions and comments to Daniel Baer and Robert Tillotson, the committee members overseeing the revitalization process. "People will call …
