Crisfield Decides on District Makeup Days

Millburn superintendent announces plan for school calendar.

After Superstorm Sandy, Millburn schools were required to stay closed during extended power outages.  Superintendent Dr. James Crisfield recently announced the district's plan for the school calendar: To be sure, there were options to choose from to make up the days and the above plan will not please everybody. In fact, I can't think of a topic that attracts more opinions (many of which are, let's say, "strongly held") and that can more solidly guarantee a lack of unanimity than the school calendar! But something had to be done, so I solicited input from many quarters, listened to everybody's pros and cons, and then made the call.  I thank everybody in advance for your understanding and kind consideration.  Jim Crisfield

Board Puts Off School Calendar Vote

February break would still be two days, but the half days would be converted to full days in a new proposal.

More changes are on the way for the 2012-13 school calendar, but February break is expected to be kept at two days. The Millburn Board of Education put off its vote on the calendar during its meeting on Monday night. The proposal that was supposed to be up for a vote would have cut February break to two days while the remainder of the week would have been half days. Scott Kamber, program committee chairman, said more changes were being made to the calendar, and among them would be to convert the three half days into full days. Kamber made his comments after Kathy Monahan, a parent, said she thinks the half days are a bad idea. "Nothing will happen in school," she said. "The kids won't be there. Spread out the days over the year." By having…

February School Break Could Be Reduced in 2013

Break could be two days off in an effort to not end school as late as June 28.

Don't make your plans to head on vacation for February break in 2013 just yet because there might not be a full week off. The Millburn Board of Education split its vote on the calendar for 2012-13 during its meeting Monday night. The proposal includes cutting down February break to two days with the remaining three days being half days. Because the board split its vote 4-4, the motion did not carry. Board President Michael Birnberg said the proposal would return at the next meeting when all board members could be present. The school board had previously put off voting on the proposed 2012-13 calendar because of concerns about the layout of half days and how school could end on June 28. If the proposal were to pass, school would start on …

Regarding the spring break . . . I believe that they arrive at the timing by scheduling the break exactly half way between February break and the end of school. I think this was decided at so as not to have to choose between coinciding the break with Easter or Passover.   more ›

School Board Considers School Year Calendar

Board members reject combining spring and winter vacations and starting school before Labor Day

Should school start after Labor Day? Should there be one break rather than two in the second half of the school year? Millburn Board of Education members didn't give support for either happening during a discussion last week. Board President Michael Birnberg raised the issue during the board's retreat, which was a free discussion on a number of issues, including the budget. Birnberg wondered if it was time to break the cycle since the school year is lasting longer, especially with many high school students completing work in May because of Advanced Placement tests. He questioned the board if it was time to look at having one week off in March instead of one week in February and one week in April. Additionally, he wondered if it was time to…

Half days and dispersed days off are very disruptive to the routine of school. November was awful, with 2 days off for the teachers convention, 3 half days for teachers conferences, a half day before Thanksgiving and then 2 days off for Thanksgiving. A number of things in school are planned on a five day cycle - like word work in early elementary school grades. These get very messed up if there …   more ›

BOE Approves Change to 2010-11 School Calendar

Spring break was moved to April 18-25.

Don't confirm those spring break vacation plans just yet. The Board of Education approved a chance to the 2010-11 school calendar that moves spring break to April 18-25. Schools Supt. Richard Brodow said during Monday's board meeting the move was necessary because the school election was moved to April 27. The changes also include the extended days for the elementary school due to parent conferences. Those days now will be Nov. 16, 17 and 18 and April 12, 13 and 14. While the main focus of the changes was on spring vacation, Debra Fox, a board member, questioned other changes to be made to the calendar. She said the Monday after Martin Luther King's Birthday, a school holiday, is a half day for students. It can be difficult for parents. …
