Race to the Top Returns, This Time for School Districts

But with signoff from local unions required, some districts have been sidelined.

Twenty-one New Jersey school districts are among more than 370 nationwide to apply for $400 million in federal Race to the Top funds, as the sweeping and sometimes controversial competition goes local with a push into specific instruction models and technology. Due last week, the applications came from a wide range of districts in New Jersey, from Newark and Paterson to three different consortia of suburban districts. Winners will be announced by the end of the year.     But part of the story was also about districts that didn’t apply, unable to get their local unions to sign off, as is now required by the grant program. Deerfield Uncovers 50-Year-Old Time Capsule [VIDEO]

As part of the 50th anniversary, principal Kelly Salazar finishes her search for the school's rumored time capsule.

After months of an 'Indiana Jones' style search, Deerfield Elementary School officials unveiled a 50-year-old time capsule from when the school was built in 1962. "I'm really happy," Salazar said when the capsule was found. "Could you imagine if we were out here for …

Millburn Schools Open Monday

A message from the superintendent with information regarding this upcoming school week.

Dear Millburn families,  This is Update #11 regarding post-Sandy plans and progress. Good news!  As of 7:00pm yesterday, all seven schools have been re-energized!  This is (FINALLY!) the news we've been waiting for.  The bad news is there are still some homes without power, so our sympathies remain with those families and we will of course continue to extend whatever accommodations or arrangements they may need to make their lives slightly less dislocated or complicated. Here is where we stand for next week: STATUS OF THE MAKE-UP DAYS:  At this time, we do not know how the missed days will be made up.  "The Make-Up Decision" is an important topic to be sure, and I know people need to know for future travel and other plans, so we will …
