Pair Drove Utility Vehicle on Train Tracks, Cops Say

The two men allegedly stole a utility vehicle from the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum late Wednesday and drove it on the tracks abandoning it at the Short Hills train station, police say.

Two men were arrested late Wednesday for allegedly driving a utility vehicle on the train tracks in Short Hills, Millburn police said.  The two men were identified as Gregory Morley, 24, of Matawan, and William Deppisch, 25, of Jersey City, according to NJ Transit spokesperson, Nancy Snyder. According to Capt. Michael Palardy, police repsonded to a report at about 9:30 p.m. of two men driving on the train tracks.  Upon arrival, the officers found an abandoned John Deer Gator on the tracks at the Short Hills train station.* According to the report, two men matching the same description, white shirts and blue jeans, were reported hitchhiking on Short Hills Avenue. Police found the men in Springfield near 300 Short Hills Avenue and were …

Committee Cuts Down on Commuter Parking in Neighborhoods

Millburn ordinance approves parking limits on Oak Hill Road, Oakview Terrace and Woodland Road near Short Hills train station.

The Millburn Township Committee approved a new ordinance at Tuesday night's meeting that will limit daytime parking on three Short Hills streets to cut down on commuters parking in residential neighborhoods. The committee approved the ordinance to address residents' complaints about parking in neighborhoods near the Short Hills train station instead of designated commuter parking lots.  The ordinance will limit parking to three hours between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on: "Now instead of just prohibiting overnight parking, this will prohibit all day parking," Millburn Committeewoman Sari Greenberg said. A Short Hills resident in attendance thanked the committee for the ordinance.

Seems curious to not also designate Stony Lane and Inwood which are an integral part of the area otherwise designated? Also why not include the upper part of Woodland Rd,n Ridge Terrace, Ferncliff and Pine Terrace W and Baltusrol? How did Township Comm zero in on this particular few roads?   more ›

Short Hills Woman Killed by Train Identified

NJ Transit officials said the woman was hit by a Dover-bound train Saturday night.

NJ Transit authorities have released the identity of a woman killed after being struck by a train near the Short Hills train station Saturday night. Officials identified the woman as Short Hills resident Stephanie Alexander, 45. She was hit by a Dover-bound train several hundered feet west of the station at about 10 p.m. Saturday, according to NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder. The engineer reportedly sounded the train's horn and used the emergency brake, but the woman "made no attempt to move," officials said. There were no injuries reported among the 325 passengers and crew on the train and no delays in service.

A Peek Inside the Box Car Bar & Grill

The Short Hills Train Station restaurant will open for coffee, breakfast next week, with full service in a few weeks.

The Box Car Bar & Grill will begin opening next week, owners say, first with coffee and continental breakfast served inside the Short Hills Train Station waiting room. Two or three weeks after that the rest of the bar and grill will open, too, said co-owner Jeff Tauber. "It's a long-time coming for the suffering commuters," Tauber said. "But it's going to be worth it. This is something the neighborhood desperately needs." While many agree with him, there have been some grumblings about the construction, which has taken months beyond what they expected and has displaced the men's room to a portable toilet outside. Great addition but they need to keep the music down - played a live band outside all day today - hope they keep the music down else there will def be complains. I have been there once & its a great place from the inside (good food & drinks) but would say - let music be music and not noise.   more ›
