Top Senior Female Athlete of the Spring: Kaitlin Zampino

The Millburn pitcher and slugger was the key to the best four-year run in Millburn softball history.

There are no more valuable roles on a softball team than being the starting pitcher or the three hole hitter. But when one player assumes both and performs to the highest level in each, their importance cannot be overstated. Kaitlin Zampino led the Millers in every pitching category and nearly every hitting category this spring. The four-year starter bound for Franklin and Marshall College in the fall won 10 games and struck out 117 batters in 115 innings with a 2.80 ERA. At the plate, she led the team in batting average (.391), homeruns (five), doubles (four), triples (three) and slugging percentage (.695). "I'm more proud of how my hitting has become more so than my pitching because to me pitching is easy. It's just because I've been …

Best Ever? Millers Softball Concludes Successful Season

The girls reached the sectional semifinals game and posted a 15-11 record.

Another spring has passed and once again the Millburn softball program has taken another step forward. For the first time in team history, the girls reached the state sectional semifinals, knocking off two favored opponents on the road in doing so. If you asked Miller head coach John Childs, he'd have no problem telling you this year's 15-11 team was the greatest softball team in Millburn's history. It's not very easy to argue against him either. This season was one of change for the Miller girls and the rest of North Jersey. With the conferences realigned, the Millers moved from the now dissolved Northern Hills Conference to the Super Essex Conference Liberty Division. On top of that, the pitching circle was moved back three feet to help …

Fire Departments Battle on Field to Raise Money

The West Orange Fire Department beats the Millburn and Summit departments while raising money for West Orange Cares.

The West Orange Fire Department was the winner in a charity softball game between it and the Millburn and Summit fire departments, but the focus of the game was to raise money for West Orange Cares. The charity is an organization with the sole mission of providing support for U.S. troops stationed overseas. The organization sends letters and packages to troops all over the world. In addition to raising money, the organization also collected items to be shipped to the troops. Event coordinator, Micky Wagner said that she is not sure how much the softball game generated for West Orange Cares, because the funds go directly into a donation box without being counted. She added that the rain may have scared off would-be supporters. "What are you…

Millburn Magic 10U Loses in Championship Game

The spring campaign ends with a 5-4 extra inning loss to Branchburg.

The pre-season expectations for the 2010 Millburn Magic 10U Fast pitch softball team were somewhat muted with only two starters returning from last summer's squad that advanced to the semi-final game of the league playoffs. But the Magic, infused with new talent and a heightened team spirit, rose to the challenge, culminating in the best post-season finish ever by a Millburn 10U squad. On Saturday, the Magic trounced Bridgewater in the semi-final game of the Central Jersey Amateur Softball League 16-4.  Kayla Wolf went the distance on the mound, fanning six and limiting the league's most potent offense to just three hits over six innings of work.  Millburn played exceptional defense behind Wolf, who did not allow a base runner until the …

Millburn Falls to Nutley in State Tourney

The Millers lose 8-0 in the section semi-finals.

The Millburn softball team couldn't pull off its third straight upset on Tuesday afternoon. The Millers lost 8-0 to 10th-seeded Nutley in the NJSIAA North 2, Group 3 semi-final game. The temperature was a hair under 90 degrees at game time, but that didn't keep the Millburn fanbase from coming out and showing their support. Millburn's Ali Graebner lead off against Nutley right-hander Kayla Huegel to begin the game. Huegel quicky retired Graebner via a ground out. Later in the inning, Bridgid Cunningham singled and stole second. Unfortunately for the Millers, Cunningham was left stranded at second base. Millburn starting pitcher Kaitlin Zampino, who was coming off a solid outing, toed the rubber in the bottom portion of the inning and …
