Larry Dell's "Nature's Resolve" is the first in the new Wildflower Sculpture Project.
Maplewood resident Larry Dell says he spends a lot of time in the South Mountain Reservation — especially after October’s nor’easter. It was during his time in the Reservation, Dell studied the storm’s damage to nature and the foliage that he got the idea to do something positive with the twigs and branches. “I come up here often and after the snowstorm, there were so many trees and twigs down,” said Dell. “I decided I’d utilize these twigs and trees into this structure.” Dell collected the trees and branches and tightly wove them together in a pyramid shape. He then painted the sculpture a metallic aluminum color. The 9½-foot-tall, 5-foot-wide sculpture he created is made exclusively of storm-damaged twigs and branches and was …

Residents want a representative on subcommittee; township still looking into all the problems including sewer infrastructure, drainage and pumps.
Millburn will be dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irene for a long time to come, but residents in the South Mountain area want some relief soon from the drainage issues that cause trouble any time it rains and want improvements to a sewer system back up into their homes, leaving them with much more than water to contend with. The Township Committee on Tuesday night heard the same report that the public heard last – with some additions from last week’s storm subcommittee meeting. Basically, nothing can be done to prevent flooding in a storm the size of Irene, which was bigger than a 100-year storm. But there areas in the neighborhood that are like “bowls” that retain water when it rains and those areas need help. Mayor Sandy Haimoff …

Residents are also concerned about mosquitoes, contamination from sewage, as well as fixing the sewer and drainage problems before another major storm.
In a hot and overcrowded room, the Millburn Township’s Irene subcommittee met with residents, mostly of the South Mountain area, on Wednesday night to gather information about everything from the sewage flooding to the river overflowing its banks, to the residual effects of the flooding including contamination and the new mosquito breeding ground the area has become. At the first of the township's subcommittee meetings, engineers who helped the town with its flooding remediation after Hurricane Floyd discussed short, medium and long-range possible plans as well as action residents and the township can take to help prevent flooding in the future – unless there’s another natural disaster. Both town representatives and the engineers stressed …
