More Speed Hump-Related Road Work Coming

The removal of the speed humps isn't quite complete.

The speed humps are gone on Glen and Hobart avenues, but there are still divot and bumps where they once were. But that soon will change. Township officials have hired a contractor, DeLuca Paving, to fix the road. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said the workers likely will put in a strip of asphalt over the area where each speed hump was located. The work should be completed this week mattering on the schedule of the company. The work originally was to be done last Friday, but the weather nixed the plans, Gordon said. The cost of the project is $4,000. The Township Committee agreed in March for the removal of five of the eight speed humps that were installed last November. Three of the four humps on Glen Avenue and two on Hobart Avenue …

Pay to put them in. Use manpower to remove them Pay to fix the damage caused. That sounds like a GREAT plan to me. What a waste of money.   more ›

Glen Avenue Speed Humps Removed

Three of the four humps on Glen Avenue were removed. Two on Hobart Avenue still need to be taken out.

A Department of Public Works crew completed removing the speed humps on Glen Avenue on Tuesday, but the two on Hobart Avenue still remain. Three of the four Glen Avenue speed humps—the ones in front of the library, in front of the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad and near Cape Court—were removed as part of the five speed humps that are to be taken out. The one by the library was removed on Thursday, and the other two were taken out on Tuesday. The hump by Slayton Field will remain. Two speed humps on Hobart Avenue—one near Taylor Street and the other near and Great Oak Drive—still need to be removed. Police Sgt. David Bonney said Tuesday it was unclear when that could happen. The road in the area would need to be closed …

Darn, those speedbumps really helped for turning left off of Glen into the train lots during the morning rush and they weren't bad to drive over once they had settled. If we can't have the speedbumps, can we get a light at Glen and Lackawanna Place? It won't have the same effect, but would definitely help when turning left onto Glen from Lackawanna Place.   more ›

First Speed Hump Removed on Glen

The remaining four speed humps slated for removal likely will be taken out early next week.

Workers on Thursday were removing the first of five speed humps that are slated to be taken out. They were taking advantage of Glen Avenue being closed in front of the Millburn Public Library to remove the speed hump located there. The road was closed between Lackawanna Place and Brookside Drive because of a water main break. It is the only speed hump that would be removed on Thursday, and it also would indicate to workers how long it would take to remove the speed humps. The Township Committee came to a consensus on Tuesday night to remove five of the eight speed humps installed last fall. The speed humps to be removed are three on Glen Avenue between Brookside and Wyoming Avenue and the two on Hobart Avenue. Two speed humps on Parkview …

Five Speed Humps To Be Removed

Three on Glen and two on Hobart will be removed because of traffic counts.

There will be five less speed humps within the next week after a review of traffic counts and legal issues. Three speed humps on Glen Avenue and two on Hobart Avenue will be removed within five days by Department of Public Works crews per a recommendation of the Township Committee's Public Safety Committee. The speed humps to be removed on Glen Avenue are near Cape Court, the Millburn Public Library and Lackawanna Place. The humps on Hobart to be removed are near Taylor Street and Great Oak Drive. Speed humps will remain on Parkview Drive and on Glen Avenue near Slayton Field. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said the recommendation was based on a legal ruling and the traffic counts from the police. The streets have more than 3,000 …

Speed Humps Coming Back to Township Committee

The committee will hear about a recommendation from the Public Safety Committee.

News is coming on the township's speed humps. It'll be before the Township Committee on Tuesday night. The Public Safety Committee will have a recomendation on the speed humps to bring to the Township Committee during its meeting. But Township Administrator Tim Gordon would not say what it is because paperwork had yet to be sent to all Township Committee members. The Township Committee is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday in Town Hall. At the last committee meeting on March 2, its members heard again from residents complaining about the speed humps, including Barbara Curvin, who spoke out against speed humps in January. The Glen Avenue resident again expressed her disastisfaction with a hump that is in front of her house and wants it …

Speed Humps Debated at Township Committee

Residents on both sides of the issues spoke Tuesday night when the police presented a draft policy.

The Township Committee heard Tuesday how some residents like the speed humps, but others want them removed. Police officials detailed their recommendations of a speed hump policy for future installations. The presentation is a draft and could change before its put into effect. Township officials installed eight speed humps on Glen Avenue, Hobart Avenue and Parkview Drive in November. After complaints from residents, the humps were deemed to be too high and subsequently were lowered. Since then township officials have been determining a criteria for speed hump installations, and the police gave an initial report in December. The draft policy presented Tuesday night includes what roads would be eligible for speed humps. Included are that the…

I seem to live in the speed hump capital of the world, and they don't solve problems---they just move them, at a significant expense to township and detriment to residents. They may solve the problem in front of someone's house but one street away, the traffic doubles!   more ›

Police: Speed Humps Should Be Last Resort

They issue a draft report to the Township Committee about them, and a full discussion will be held on Jan. 15.

Police are working on setting the criteria on when speed humps should be installed, but they believe they should be a last resort. Police officials issued a draft report on the issue during Tuesday's Township Committee meeting. They have been studying the issue since eight speed humps were installed in Millburn-Short Hills—four on Glen Avenue, two on Parkview Drive and two on Hobard Avenue. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said the four on Glen Avenue are associated with the new bicycle path, but officials needed to purchase a minimum of eight humps. The other locations, especially on Parkview, were areas that have had histories of speeding problems. Township officials, though, want to test how the new speed humps work for some time, …

Downtown Parking, Speed Humps, Salaries on Township Committee Agenda

The committee is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

Downtown parking, speed humps and proposed salary increases will be discussed at the Millburn Township Committee meeting Tuesday night. The committee is expected to hear about upgrading the downtown pay machines and the speed humps during the reports section of the agenda. Additionally, there is a public hearing on the proposed salary ordinance. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said he received information from Metric Parking, the vendor for the six pay machines downtown, on how much it would costs to upgrade the machines to accept credit cards. The Township Committee would need to decide on if the work should be done. The hardware is already included in the machines, but it would take several hours of labor to complete the upgrade. It …

Six Speed Humps Fixed

They were lowered by at least one inch.

Six of the eight new speed humps installed last month have been lowered to match what township officials wanted. Workers lowered the four humps on Glen Avenue and the two on Hobart Avenue since Friday morning. They were lowered by 1-1.5 inches, according to Township Administrator Tim Gordon. The humps on Parkview Drive were not changed. The contractor who installed the humps will not charge the township for the changes to the speed humps. The project for the eight speed humps cost $8,000. Township officials measured the humps after residents complained the new humps were too high. They determined they were at least one inch higher than they intended them to be. Police and other township officials are now examining the use of speed humps …

Speed Hump Repairs in Progress

Hobart Avenue hump was being fixed Monday morning.

Workers were out on Hobart Avenue near Millburn Middle School to fix the speed hump there Monday morning. Township officials have been trying to get the contractor for the project to lower the humps since before Thanksgiving. They ruled the speed humps—which were installed on Hobart Avenue, Glen Avenue and Parkview Drive—were about one inch higher than they wanted. Township Engineer Tom Watkinson was to meet with the contractor last Friday. More details to come.
