Miller Tennis Team Takes Section Crown

The next hurdle on the road to the Tournament of Champions is groups competition at Mercer County Park.

The Millburn High varsity tennis team took the Group 3, North 2 section title Friday with a clean sweep of Chatham High School. All courts won easily, capping a week of wins that included a shutout of Belleville High School in the quarterfinals and a 4-1 semifinal win over Chester's West Morris Central High School. Chatham had upset Mendham in the semifinals, but in the title match, held on neutral ground at Newark Academy's courts, that team could get no traction against Millburn. Millburn's first point was notched by second doubles Nicky Chen-Schmidt and Teddy Moskovitz, who defeated Parker Dixon and Tom Karmel 6-2, 6-0. Third singles Dean Koman followed on their heels with a 6-1, 6-0 trouncing of Yousef Ismail. The match-clinching third…

MHS Boys' Tennis Team Sails into Sectional Semifinals

An easy win over Belleville starts the NJSIAA tournament for Millburn.

Rain may have forced the Millburn High School varsity tennis team indoors to begin their run at the state championship on Monday, but inside the Brooklake Country Club tennis facility, the weather was just right. The Millers, seeded No. 1 in the early round sectional competition, lost just one game overall in defeating Belleville High School 5-0. All three singles players double-bageled their opponents in quick succession. Jon Duan scored the first team point, beating Brian Ramirez 6-0, 6-0, at the third singles position. Dean Koman, at second singles, followed shortly with a shutout against Stephen Daroy. Not to be outdone, first singles Tyler Schick clinched the match-winning third point with his 6-0,6-0 victory against Russell …

Millburn Tennis Upset in Tournament Semi-Finals

The team had beaten Pascack Hills in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In a series of mutual payback contests, the Millburn boys’ varsity tennis team lost 3-2 to Newark Academy in the semi-final round of the 39th Newark Academy Invitational on Sunday. In their sole prior meeting with the Livingston private school this season, the Millers had come out on top by 4-1. Earning the first MHS point, second doubles Nicky Chen-Schmidt and Teddy Moskovitz beat NA’s Arjuna Siva and Ben Hyatt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, avenging their three-set loss in the teams’ first meeting in early April. The next team point went to the Minutemen, as second singles Myles Schalet reversed his early-season loss to Miller Rob Xie. Fending off Xie’s strong second-set assault, Schalet won 6-3, 7-5. Millburn took the next point, thanks to…

This Championship Season: MHS Tennis Wins Essex County Tournament

With a big victory over Livingston, the boys’ winning season continues to gather steam.

The Millburn High School boys’ tennis team was crowned Essex County champion on Saturday, after a decisive 4-1 victory over first-seed rival Livingston High School. The triumph was especially sweet for two reasons: The tournament trophy had remained frustratingly out of reach of the Millers for three years running, and their defeat of the Lancers ended a streak of at least six straight losses to Livingston over the past two seasons. In the semifinals earlier in the day, Millburn had shut out fourth-seeded Montclair 5-0, and Livingston had beaten third-seeded Newark Academy 3-2. The Miller lineup against Montclair included Tyler Schick, Rob Xie, and Dean Koman at first, second, and third singles, respectively, Mac Johnson and Jared Wishnow …

MHS Tennis Team Blanks MKA, Falls to Livingston

The varsity boys are 4-1 so far this season.

The Miller tennis team’s shutout of Montclair Kimberley Academy on Thursday may have helped assuage the sting of losing a close match to archrival Livingston High School the day before. The MKA match proceeded smoothly, with wins on all courts. First doubles for the match were Nicky Chen-Schmidt and Jon Duan, who took the first team point 6-0, 6-1. The second team point was scored by second doubles Mac Johnson and Brian Alter, who beat Jack Ross and Justin Minion 6-1, 6-1. Close on their heels, the winning team point belonged to Teddy Moskovitz at third singles, who dispatched Vineet Champaneria 6-0, 6-1. Tyler Schick, on the top court, notched the fourth point, defeating Jason Kwan 6-0, 6-2. Millburn’s fifth and final point was delivered …

MHS Tennis Players Giving Back Through the Game

Jenna Berkenkamp and Carolyn Rauch organized the Millburn BGCN Tennis and Tutoring Initiative to help young people in Newark.

When the bell rings to close the school day at Millburn High School, juniors Carolyn Rauch and Jenna Berkenkamp immediately switch roles from students to teachers. But the lesson they're providing might be more valuable than anything they've learned inside the classroom. It's the lesson of giving back to the community. Twice a week, Rauch and Berkenkamp and about a dozen other Millburn High School students make the drive to the Newark Boys & Girls Club and volunteer their services instructing tennis and tutoring children in their academic studies. It's only about 20 minutes away but the communities are worlds apart. The girls, who are members of the Millburn High School's Tournament of Champions girls tennis team semifinalists, have helped…

Millburn Girls Wrap Up Another Championship Season

The girls season ended in the Tournament of Champions semi-finals against Westfield.

The Miller girls tennis team can call itself a dynasty. This season they collected their sixth straight county championship, fifth straight sectional championship, fifth consecutive Group 3 championship, their eighth straight conference championship  (two straight SEC titles) and were among the final four in the state. The bad news for the rest of the state is the 25-2 Millburn girls are losing just one senior and will again be loaded and ready for their annual run in 2011. With all of their singles positions still in tact and three of the four doubles players returning, Millburn's reign at the top of Essex County, North Jersey and Group 3 is very likely to continue. "It was an excellent season, no question," said Millburn head coach …

Millburn Girls Make it Five Straight Group Titles

The girls tennis team beats Ramapo to win the Group 3 title.

For a short while it looked like the Miller girls tennis team would fall short of its fifth consecutive Group 3 Championship on Wednesday at Mercer County Park. But with their backs up against the wall, Millburn sophomore Tatiana Cherne gutted out a three set win over Ramapo's Katie Nerlino, giving Millburn the 3-2 win. A winner from Nerlino late in the third set gave the Ramapo junior a 5-4 lead at third singles. But Cherne was able to hold serve and then came back from a double game-point deficit to force two deuces and an eventual break serve, giving Cherne a 6-5 lead. Nerlino fought hard in the decisive game, also fighting back from a 40-15 deficit to force two deuces, but Cherne held serve again and held on for a 7-5 third set victory…

Miller Girls Make It Five Straight Section Titles

The girls tennis team beats Mendham to capture the title.

Minutes after the Miller girls tennis team had wrapped up its fifth consecutive North II Group 3 state sectional championship, the team was told they had to gather to take a team photo. When first doubles starter Patricia Chau asked why, her former partner, Jenna Berkenkamp, had to remind Chau they just had won a championship and that it was a pretty big deal. Monday's routine 4-1 win over Mendham at Newark Academy didn't generate many claps or cheers from the Blue and White and there were no jumps of joy or group hugs. Just a few smiles and giggles. It was businees as usual and just stage one for the Miller girls, who have bigger fish to fry beginning on Wednesday at the Group 3 championships. "We're definitely excited to win every year …

Double Trouble: Bary and Chau One of State's Top Tandems

Millburn's top tennis doubles team has been crushing the competition this season.

There are times in sports when words like dominance can be used too liberally. In the case of Millburn's first doubles duo, it may not be doing Emily Bary and Patricia Chau enough justice. In 15 matches this season heading into Saturday's quarterfinal round of the state doubles tournament, the girls were unbeaten and have been untouchable. Not only were they a perfect 15-0, but they hadn't lost a set this season and no team had even won five games in a set. On average, teams were winning fewer than 1.5 games per set against Millburn's tandem, meaning in a regular match this season a team would be lucky to steal three games. "Besides being excellent players, they really understand doubles," said Millburn head coach Elliot Lovi. "It's …
