24/7 PATH Service Could Resume in Seven Days

Trains will run from Newark to the World Trade Center this weekend. There'll be no service between Hoboken and 33rd Street over the weekend.

Round the clock PATH service could resume between seven and ten days, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.  "Workers can make repairs to the PATH system significantly faster when power to third rails is turned off, with no trains running in active construction zones," according to the Port Authority's announcement.  On Saturday January 5 and Sunday January 6, service will be suspended between Hoboken and 33rd Street. Trains will run between Newark and the World Trade Center this weekend instead.  Round the clock service has been suspended since Sandy hit Hoboken in late October, 2012.  Hoboken's PATH station was the last one to open, and service has been restored between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day.

Township Looking for Train Station Concession Manager

It's been more than a year since a concession stand was located at the Short Hills Train Station

Township officials are looking for a way to provide concession services for commuters at the Short Hills Train Station. The Millburn Township Committee voted recently to send out a request for proposals for someone to manage any concessions that could be placed in the train station building, which is owned by the township. Township Administrator Tim Gordon said officials have received a number of inquiries from individuals interested in having concessions at the Short Hills train station ranging from shoe shine to food to newspapers. But township officials do not want to be a landlord because of the issues associated with it like — tracking down rent payments, he said. So instead, officials are looking for someone to manage the concessions…

Short Hills Train Parking Plan Would Remove Trees

The plan is to convert the parallel parking on Chatham Road to head-in parking.

While the Millburn Township Committee is requesting designs to build a parking garage for the Millburn Train Station, it's also looking to add parking at the Short Hills Train Station. Township officials are working out plans to convert the parallel parking on the train station side of Chatham Road to head-in parking. It would be similar to the parking at the old coal chute near Forest Drive, and committee member Robert Tillotson said it would add 40-60 spaces.  The plan would require the removal of a number of trees along Chatham Road, and the township forester tied orange ribbons around the trees that would need to be removed. Tillotson said the ribbons are to give the public a visual on what is required to add the parking. "This hasn't …

Finally, I don't think the signs for any metered parking actually say "do not park here with a permit." I think you can park there with a permit, so long as you pay the meter fee. At least we have done so on an occasion or two and have not been ticketed as a result.   more ›

Committee Considers Supporting Rail Tunnel Plan

Township Committee member James Suell presents a resolution to advocate support for the Hudson River Tunnel.

The Millburn Township Committee may offer its support to the Hudson River train tunnel, but it's members wanted to wait and see how the governor would rule on the project. The discussion was during Tuesday's committee meeting, which was less than 24 hours before Gov. Chris Christie's decision to kill the project a second time. The Star Ledger is reporting Christie's decision, which is the second time he's killed the project this month. Christie said earlier this month he was pulling the plug of the "Access to the Region's Core" project after state officials said costs would run at least $2 billion dollars over the initial $8.7 billion price tag. Christie initially supported the project. But he gave it a two-week grace period before taking …
