Sea lions are set to a make a big splash at Essex County's Turtle Back Zoo come 2013. The $5.5 million sea lion and sting ray exhibit will take 10 months to build and open on the zoo's 50th anniversary, county officials announced during a ground breaking ceremony Monday. "There used to be sea lions (here). They were very well known so we wanted to bring them back," Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. told Patch. "If you go to any major zoo, their key of the zoo is the sea lion exhibit, people love to see animals in water." The 10,000 square foot exhibit that includes an 82,000 gallon pool will welcome up to four sea lions and a medley of sharks and sting rays that guests will be able to feed and touch. [Update Sept. 23: The grand opening of the treetop adventure course has been postponed until Sunday due to the weather.] There was no monkey business for a group of Essex County Patch Editors that swung across tress at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo's newest exhibit: the Treetop Adventure Course. Members of the media were invited on Monday for a sneak peek of the county's aerial obstacle course and zipline slated to open to the public on Saturday. The roughly three-acre space includes two aerial courses that each contain 12 obstacles. Each course finishes with a zipline that brings you back down to ground level. With the course reaching a maximum height of 35 feet, guests are required to wear a harness and a helmet, and are encouraged to …

Kean University Montclair State already sponsor exhibits at the zoo.
New Jersey Institute of Technology is moo-ving into Turtle Back Zoo as one of three Garden State college sponsors. The school will contribute $3,000 each year for the next three years to the Essex County zoo's highland cattle, or kyloe, exhibit. The holiday lights will shine brighter. They'll also be free. Essex County kicks off "Holiday Lights Spectacular" Saturday at Turtle Back Zoo, and it's the fourth year the event has taken place. As a substitute for admission fees, patrons are asked to donate nonperishable food items for the needy. "This is a way of giving back," said Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. during a recent kick-off for the vent. Essex County's Turtle Back Zoo officially opened Tropical Currents, the zoo's $250,000, marine-only aquarium Friday afternoon. "We're adding fish in every day and we'll be adding more in over the next few days," said Jeremy Goodman, the zoo's director. "It's just a great opportunity for the zoo, the county and the zoological society to talk about their two newest endeavors." The zoo also opened its neighboring miniGOLF Safari Friday. Essex County Turtle Back Zoo has added some new African animals to its collection Friday, but instead of fur and skin, they're made of plaster and cement. The zoo celebrated the grand opening of its newest attraction, an African-themed, 19-hole miniature golf course. Jeremy Goodman, Turtle Back Zoo's director, said the roughly $800,000 miniGOLF Safari, the course's official name, is part of a new vision for the zoo. "It provides another form of recreation for the residents and another source of revenue for the county," said Goodman. "It is all developed along the lines of Africa." Ever visited the penguins at the Turtle Back Zoo? You can help name the newest editions to the exhibit. Entries to name the two new African Penguins are due by July 26 at noon, and the winning names will be announced on July 29. The two African Penguins were born in Denver and brought to the Zoo through a penguin species survival and breeding program. They are currently acclimating to New Jersey in the zoo's state of the art veterinary hospital prior to joining the other penguins. There are now eight penguins in the Penguin Coast exhibit, which opened in 2008. Funded with a donation from the Zoological Society of New Jersey, the exhibit re-creates the rocky, South African coast where the birds are found. It also provides large windows …
