The American Legion holds its Veterans Day ceremony at the post.
Millburn-Short Hills veterans and their families gathered at American Legion Post 140 on Main Street Thursday morning for the annual Veterans Day ceremony. Post Commander Bill Keenan told the crowd the veterans learned purpose, sacrifice, tolerance, bravery and discipline through their service. Those virtues are a foundation for a great nation, he said, and they are needed when pursuing and maintaining peace. Mayor Tom McDermott and Deputy Mayor Sandra Haimoff also expressed their thanks to the veterans. Millburn police and firefighters served as part of the honor guard for the ceremony.

Rachel Okrent typed thousands of names to create a tribute inspired by the Vietnam War Memorial.
After visiting the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington last spring, Millburn High School junior Rachel Okrent used it as an inspiration to honor the soldiers who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. "I thought it was beautifully simple, just granite and names, so when (teacher Michelle) Blakely assigned us a memorial project I knew I wanted to follow in that tradition," Okrent said. In a project for her American Literature class last spring, she typed the names of the 4,400 fallen soldiers (as of May) as part of the culmination of the War and Remembrance unit. Her final work, which has the names set against an American flag, is called "Together We Fall." Blakely's father had a student who is listed in her project, Okrent said, …

The American Legion holds its annual Veterans Day ceremony.
More than 90 years ago, World War I ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In the years since then, veterans have been honored, and they were again Wednesday in Millburn-Short Hills A small group of veterans, public officials, police officers, firefighters and residents gathered at the American Legion post on Main Street to honor veterans past and present. Rich Dority, legion commander, said Veterans Day is when they remember how so many men and women set aside their civilian pursuits to "preserve American heritage." It was their determination that made them better soldiers in addition to fighting with their minds and their hearts. But in order for there to be world peace, everyone needs to work together in unity, he …

He lived on Ocean Street in Millburn and the American Legion post is now named for him.
If you ask members of the Millburn American Legion if they remember anything about Guy R. Bosworth, they'll tell you he lived on Ocean Street. That was Commander Rick Dority's experience when he asked legion members about the man for whom the post is named. Bosworth, a Millburn resident, was the first person from New Jersey to lose his life during World War I. He was a local pharmacist who had enlisted in the Army just months before he died on Oct. 17, 1917 when his ship, the S.S. Antilles, was sunk by a German submarine, killing 67. He was 26 years old. At the legion, a painting of Bosworth hangs in one of the rooms with a plaque describing who he was. They also have on hand a certificate from the U.S. Army about Bosworth's death. Dority …
