PATH Will Run 24/7 on New Year's Eve, Day

First time the commuter line will run 24/7 since Hurricane Sandy devastated the system.

  The PATH is running 24/7 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on Monday.  This will be the first time the PATH is running round the clock since Hurricane Sandy.  Until then, service runs between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. every day. The Hoboken station was reopened last week after being closed for nearly two months.  From the Port Authority's announcement:  On Tuesday, Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 p.m., PATH trains will run both ways from Newark to the World Trade Center, Journal Square to 33rd Street, and Hoboken and 33rd Street. PATH Service to World Trade Center Resumes Monday

Hoboken service remains suspended, but the Port Authority and NJ Transit are offering alternate routes for commuters.

  Getting into New York City will be a little easier this week.  PATH service to the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan will resume Monday morning, according to the PATH website. Trains to the World Trade Center have been canceled since sustaining damage during Hurricane Sandy.  PATH trains will run weekdays between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m in New Jersey through Newark, Harrison, Journal Square, Grove Street and Exchange Place. NJ Transit Resumes Some Rail Service to NYC

Rail service on the Jersey Coast Line, Raritan Valley Line and Main Line remain suspended due to a power outage at the NJ TRANSIT rail operations center.

NJ TRANSIT has announced that rail service to New York Penn Station has resumed on the Northeast Corridor Line, but service on all other rail lines remains suspended due to a power outage and damage from Hurricane Sandy. According to the NJ TRANSIT website, the Northeast Corridor is running trains between Trenton and New York Penn Station on a modified schedule. Visit NJTransit.com to view schedules. The River Line light rail and the majority of bus service in New Jersey have already resumed. All other rail service aside from the Northeast Corridor line remains suspended until further notice. According to the website, rail passes are currently being cross-honored on buses.

NJTransit System Reports 'Unprecedented Devastation'

Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia

The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. NJ Transit Shutdown Preparations Underway

Hurricane Sandy may cause a system-wide stoppage on Monday.

In response to the increasing dire forecast surrounding Hurricane Sandy, the Christie Administration announced that preparations have begun for the potential shutdown of NJ Transit bus, rail, light rail and Access Link service, effective Monday.  “The safety of our customers, employees and the public-at-large is paramount,” said NJ Transit Board Chairman and New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson. “By beginning this important process, NJ Transit will be better able to support the state’s response to Hurricane Sandy by freeing up buses or other resources that may be needed for hurricane relief.” The systematic shutdown of NJ Transit service would require a minimum of 12 hours to complete.
