Millburn Board of Education nominates, unanimously approves new member to fill the open seat left by Jean Pasternak.
Following a unanimous vote Monday, the Millburn Board of Education appointed John Westfall-Kwong to fill an open seat on the township school board. "I'm just delighted to be joining the board and very grateful that they appointed me," Westfall-Kwong said. "I also want to recognize the other people who ran with me. They are doing great things around the community, especially with the strategic planning." The appointment fills the vacancy left when Jean Pasternack resigned in February to focus on family matters. Westfall-Kwong will retain the seat for the remainder of the term, which expires on Jan. 6, 2014. To continue for another term on the board, he will to run for election in November. Contenders discuss interest in vacant seat on Millburn Board of Education at Monday board meeting.
Five of the seven candidates vying for the seat left vacant after Millburn Board of Education member Jean Pasternak resigned at the Feb. 11 meeting made presentations to the school board and residents at Monday night's meeting. The board gave the candidates the opportunity to discuss their qualifications and interests at the meeting and also to answer two questions — why they are interested in serving on the board and what are their qualifications. Each of the candidates displayed different career experiences, but all said they wanted to give back to the Millburn School District and try to make it better. Millburn's Board of Education currently has three letters of interest for the open seat.
The deadline for applying for open seat on the Millburn Board of Education is Wednesday at 4 p.m. The board announced at Monday night's meeting, three residents have submitted letters of interest for the open seat. The seat has been empty since Jean Pasternak resigned to focus on family matters at the Feb. 11 board meeting. The candidates will be able to speak at the March 11 meeting to discuss why they are interested in serving on the board and what their qualifications are. The board will appoint a resident to fill the open seat at the April 11 meeting. To apply, send letter to the board stating an interest as well as a resumé, by fax, mail or email by 4 p.m. to Millburn Board of Education Business Administrator, Steve DiGeronimo.
