Vehicle Burglary Spree Under Investigation in Millburn

Three car burglaries, two others thwarted by residents and a garage break-in over the weekend, police said.

Three vehicles were burglarized, two other break-ins were interrupted and items were stolen from an unlocked garage over the weekend, Millburn Police said.

According to Capt. Michael Palardy, an unlocked car was burglarized on Glen Avenue sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning with $102 stolen.

In a separate incident, a Main Street resident pulled into his driveway on Friday and saw a man going through his friend's unlocked car, Palardy said.

According to the report, the resident asked the man what he was doing and then called police. When the burglar saw the phone he took off. The car's owner reported $100 was missing.

The resident described the man as a 5-foot-8 Hispanic man wearing a striped shirt and jeans.

Another unlocked car was burglarized early Sunday morning parked in an unlocked garage behind a Rosedale Avenue residence, Palardy said.

The contents of the center console were scattered in the front seats and $3.50 in loose change was stolen, according to the report.

The resident told police she heard the neighborhood dogs barking around 3:30 a.m., which is when she believes the car was burglarized.

Additionally, township residents reported two suspicious incidents this weekend where two people were attempting to enter their parked cars.

At about 8 p.m Saturday, a Slayton Drive resident told police he saw a man walk up his driveway and try to get into his BMW parked behind his home.

The resident tried to confront the man but he quickly ran toward a parked car and sped off down Slayton Drive, according to Palardy. The resident described him as a heavy-set black man with a hood covering his face.

On Sunday, an Elm Street resident reported two people walking down her driveway at about 1 p.m. and were looking in the windows of the family's cars.

The two people walked back up the driveway and down Elm Street without taking anything, the resident told police. The two were described as a man and woman, both white and in their 50s wearing workout clothes.

Also over the weekend, a Myrtle Avenue resident reported his $500 Diamondback road-style bicycle and helmet, valued at $30, were stolen form his unlocked garage, which is detached from the house, police said.

According to the report, the resident checked the garage on Saturday after finding two of his sons' helmets in the middle of the backyard. The last time he saw the bicycle was June 2.
