Five Will Vie for Four Open Seats on Millburn School Board

Millburn-Short Hills residents will see three current board members and two newcomers on the ballot in November for the board of education.

Three incumbents and two candidates will contend for four seats in the Millburn Board of Education election in November. 

Tuesday was the deadline for candidates to file their petitions for the four open seats with the Essex County Board of Elections.

According to the county clerk's office, the following candidates have filed:

  • Michael Birnberg (incumbent)
  • Emily Jaffe
  • Rona Wenik (incumbent)
  • John Westfall-Kwong (incumbent)
  • Michael King

One of the seats up for grabs is a one-year term, the remainder of Jean Pasternak's term since she resigned in February to focus on family matters.

Westfall-Kwong was selected to fill that open seat in early April until the next reorganization meeting in January 2014.

Jaffe also ran for the Pasternak's seat in March along with three other Millburn-Short Hills residents: Lucinda Mercer, Jane Greenwald and Milton Resnick. 

Birnberg has been on the board since 2007 and served as board president last year. 

Lise P. Chapman who was also elected in 2007 did not file to run again. 

Wenik, the current vice president of the school board, has opted to run for the one-year seat, according to the Millburn Item. She was elected in 2010.
